Another term for this is Introspection. Introspection is the art of understanding your inner thoughts. When you see a green leaf you and only you know exactly how you see that green leaf, if you like it or if you want. to set it on fire. Or both.
Here are some tips for Writing with Introspection:
1) Think about how you would view the situation your character is in, what thoughts would be running through your head? Compare that with how your character thinks.
2) What would you be noticing in this situation? Would you be focussing on little details or would you be taking in the entire picture? That's a good indication as to what your character would be noticing.
3) What would you be doing in this situation? Would you be figiting, standing stock still, or running for your life? Think about how your charcter reacts in certain situations and come up with a middle ground of how they'd react and who you'd react.
Too many stories have I read where the main character is trapped in a cave with murderers, they dart around the cave giving smack talk to the guards and then running for their life. Is that what you would do if you were kidnapped and held against your will by guards? Probably not.
Think about how you would honestly feel in a situation, think about how you've reacted in similar situations and write that down. How you react to certain situations is likely to be how most of us would also react.
